For a movie that's mostly about how being a teenager is like Hell on Earth, that's an incredible feeling to be able to nail, especially when said film is nearly two and a half hours long and I was never really pulled away from anything that was happening. I wasn't getting tired because I was bored, it was because the movie was putting me at ease. Make no mistake that this is at times an uncomfortable and very sad film, yet there were just as many moments of that music kicking in or there being just the right lighting, props, and colors for me to have put in this trance that I can describe as peaceful sleepiness. The movie's plot synopsis on both here and IMDb fittingly include the term "problematic," but the film also manages to so routinely makes every main character here sympathetic and engrossing to watch the journey of. Regarding what this movie is actually about, I think it's a near-perfect portrayal of the "teenage wasteland" narrative in film. Will probably listen to the album with their music from the film a dozen times by the end of the week. Yes, it's actually a band, and their music is pure slow and somber j-pop perfection. It’s so disturbing to see a sensitive and reclusive adolescent, Yûichi Hasumi (Hayato Ichihara), being bullied and of him not resisting but only trying to tune it all out by passively listening on his Walkman to his favorite singer, the ethereal rocker. I was specifically thinking of the film's music, which heavily features the compositions of Claude Debussy (Any movie that uses "Clair de Lune" as well as this does deserves all the praise in the world.) as well as music from the band Lily Chou-Chou. Director/writer Shunji Iwai’s All About Lily Chou-Chou is one tough film to watch. However, when your vibes and your intended conveying of pure emotion is this on point from practically the first shot? It's hard for me to not want to instinctively call your film "astounding." I want to go back to the sound before I forget. Yuichi (Hayato Ichihara) is in the 8th grade and he worships Lily Chou-Chou, a Bjork-like chanteuse whose epic music is lush and transcendent. That's probably for now what's keeping me from five stars. For kids around the world, music is often the only salvation when the pain and anxiety of teenage life becomes too much to bear. Do I sometimes like my movies to be a little more cohesive and easier to follow? Yes. Gorgeous and inventive camerawork and lighting. I was not expecting to be specifically reminded of the style of Hideaki Anno, where although a lot of human drama works so well because of how closely tied he is to humanity itself, the kind of camerawork and ambiance you get from something like Neon Genesis Evangelion felt like the vibe you could only get from a painstakingly designed anime. Instantly one of the most beautiful looking and sounding movies I have ever seen, period. Well, now having finally watched it, I can conclusively say there are very few new film viewings I have had this year that are better than All About Lily Chou-Chou.
Adored this, been recommended it before by a handful of good friends, kept pushing it off for reasons that varied from a lack of access to just having other movies that felt more important in the moment to get to. Was going to open this just with a joke sentence like "They're just like me but instead of Lily Chou-Chou, I have Weezer." but then during the end credits, among an onslaught of usernames, I suddenly see a message that comes from a character named "Noah," and I wanted to jump out of my skin.
